Amy Lowenhar Blauweiss, LMHC, PsyD
Amy specializes in the identification and treatment of personality disorders and co-occurring conditions, including addiction, mood disorders, and bipolar spectrum disorders. Grounded in Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), she views personality disorders not as fixed or untreatable, but as patterns shaped by heightened sensitivity to interpersonal experience. Her work centers on helping clients build new capacities for emotional regulation, relational stability, and meaningful behavioral change.
Drawing from MBT, DBT, and psychodynamic modalities such as Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), Amy integrates evidence-based practices with deep psycho-education. As a clinician, researcher, and professor, she collaborates closely with the Gunderson Personality Disorders Institute at McLean Hospital and remains involved in ongoing international research. She is affiliated with leading professional organizations including the North American and International Societies for the Study of Personality Disorders, the International Psychohistorical Association, and the International Society for Political Psychology.
Amy’s experience encompasses working with justice-impacted individuals and their families, as well as with individuals dealing with the stress of the refugee or immigrant experience. She also has extensive experience in the field of addictions.
She holds a Psy.D from the Professional School of Psychology/The Wright Institute; a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from the State University at Buffalo; Masters and Bachelors’ degrees from the The New School/Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research in Sociology and Psychology’ a certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Training and Research Institute for Relational Self Psychology; a CASAC from SUNY Ulster; and has extensive speciality training pending certification from Gunderson Personality Disorders Institute/McLean Hospital. She is engaged in continuous trainings at Harvard Medical School. She is also a Level I Certified Practitioner of Ericksonian Hypnosis from the NLP Center of New York.
