Tom McCarry, LMHC, NCC
Tom believes therapy is equal parts art and science. He sees it as a path walked together for a time, offering a place to slow down, get curious about the patterns in our lives, and explore the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and who we might become. He brings a steadfast belief in each person's capacity for meaningful change, along with the conviction that therapy can be deep and serious work without feeling like a drag.
With more than 15 years as a therapist, Tom has worked alongside people navigating burnout, depression, self-doubt, grief and loss, and profound health, relationship, and life stressors. His approach is holistic, but grounded, drawing on his broad experience in mental health, substance use recovery, and harm reduction.
Much of Tom's work involves exploring the patterns that bring us back to the same questions and experiences, those that call us to ask the deceptively simple question, "Why this again?" He is interested in the narratives and archetypes that shape how we understand ourselves, as well as the meaning we make from the experiences of our lives. Depending on the person and what they are looking for, his work may incorporate mindfulness-based practices, dream and symbol work, and exploration of the unconscious. For clients who are interested, he also offers support with psychedelic and spiritual integration.
Tom believes that therapy should begin with understanding the whole person rather than simply identifying what is wrong. He thinks of this as developing a kind of holistic cartography, a map of the many domains that exist within and around us, now and through time. From there, the therapeutic process becomes an exploration of the inner and outer worlds, helping each person find their own path toward the becoming they seek.
Outside of work, Tom enjoys communing with nature through gardening, foraging and intentional experiencing, in addition to disaster mental health volunteering, time with his cats, watching hockey and the study of consciousness.
